A plea was made to the State Government to set up a chair or start a college of music to perpetuate the memory of Carnatic vocalist late Dr. R.K.Srikantan by Shri N. S. Krishnamurthy, former Director of Akashavani at a function at Bhavan on March 2, 2014.
Shri Krishnamurthy was speaking to a jam packed audience at the Khincha Auditorium to pay homage to the maestro who was honoured with several State and National honours, including the State Sangeeta Vidwan, Sangeeta Ratna, Sangeeta Kalanidhi and Padmabushan.
The Shraddhanjali was jointly organised by Bhavan, AIR, Doordarshan, Ananya and Hamsadhwani creations.
Shri N. S. K. said Shrikantan had identified himself with music so completely that the two had become synonymous. As an artiste who had served AIR for over 40 years, he had been the voice of AIR.
Dr. K. Radhakrishna, Chairman of ISRO who had learnt music from the virtuoso spoke highly about his dedication to the art of music.
Dr. T S Satyavathi, a distinguished disciple of Dr. Shrikantan, remembered how even at his 94th year his singing was full of verve and tonal fidelity. The programme was titled 'Nada Nudi Namana' (Salutation; through music and words) started with the unveiling of a bust and a portrait! of the vocalist by ISRO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan. M. S. Sheela rendered soulful melodies and popular Hindustani vocalist Vinayak Torvi sang his dirge to the maestro.
This was followed by a concert by R. S. Ramakanth, son and disciple of Shrikantan.
