Centenarian Kannada Lexicographer G. Venkatasubbaih books at a bust of himself presented by Karnataka Governor H. R. Bharadwaj on behalf of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Bangalore Kendra.

Bhavan’s Bangalore Kendra celebrated the birth centenary of well known lexicographer and eminent litterateur Prof. G Venkatasubbiah by presenting him with ‘Kulapati Dr. K. M. Munshi Sanman’ on August 23, 2012. The Award was given to him by His Excellency Dr. H. R. Bhardwaj, Governor of Karnataka and a bust of the lexicographer sculpted by Kanaka Murthy was also unveiled.
Prof. G. Venkatasubbaiah, the father of modern Kannada dictionary, has compiled 10 dictionaries, including eight volumes of Kannada - Kannada dictionary brought out by the Kannada Sahitya Parishad and has authored 60 books. Speaking on the occasion, GV, as he is popularly known, urged the State Government to relaunch the Kannada Dictionary Office and train youngsters in the task.
Governor H. R. Bharadwaj hailed GV as the pride of Karnataka and commended his contributions for the development of Kannada language and culture. “The richness of Kannada literature should spread to other languages through translation”, he said. Unesco former ambassador Shri Chiranjeevi Singh remembered GV from the eighties and opined that the lexicographer should chronicle the cultural changes he has witnessed in the past 100 years.
Dr. Manu Baligar, Director, Directorate of Social Security and Shri Govind M. Karjol, Hon. Minister for Kannada and culture were among the dignitaries present on this special occasion.
