Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Coimbatore Kendra dedicated its 23rd Pongal Music Festival to the memory of Composer Ambujam Krishna, this being the year of her birth centenary. On the inaugural day, this year's 'Sangeeth Samrat' title was conferred on Veteran Mridangist Shri K.V.Prasad by Chairman Shri B K Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, in recognition of his long and continued service to Carnatic music. The 'Kovai Subri Muruga Gana Award', was given to well-known violinist Shri K.Balasubramanian (Kovai Balu) from Coimbatore. Following that, the chairman felicitated Shri K S Krishnan, known as 'Kovai K R S' for his 50 years of association with the theatre. Earlier, Bhavan's students presented devotional and inspirational songs.
Carnatic vocalists Smt.Ranjani and Smt. Gayathri gave a scintillating inaugural concert, accompanied by Shri. H.N. Bhaskar on the violin, Shri. Sai Giridhar on the mridangam and Shri. Chandra Sekara Sharma on the ghatam. Bombay Smt. Jayashri Ramnath's performance on the second day was soulful, with Patri Satish Kumar on the mridangam and B.S.Purushothaman on the kanjira. As always, sowkhya bhava reigned supreme as she depicted the ragas, elaborated the phrases for the niraval and added sparkle with her intricate swara patterns.
On the third day, in the morning, teachers, students and rasikas of vocal and instrumental music from Coimbatore gathered to sing the Ghanaraga Pancharatnas during the Tyagaraja Aradhana conducted at the Bhavan's premises. In the evening, Smt.S. Mahathi gave an enjoyable vocal recital accompanied by Shri H.N.Bhaskar on the violin, Shri Patri Satish Kumar on the mridangam and Shri Chandra Sekara Sharma on the ghatam. On the fourth day, Shri N. Vijay Siva, accompanied on the violin by Selvi. Charumathi Raghuram on the violin, Shri N.C.Bharadwaj on the mridangam and Shri S.Sunil Kumar on the kanjira, presented pure and pristine music. On the final day, Smt. Gayathri Venkataraghavan sang impressively and her concert's appeal was enhanced by Mysore Shri V. Srikanth on the violin, Shri N. Manoj Siva on the mridangam and Shri Krishna Sriram on the ghatam.
On all the days, up and coming artistes were provided opportunities to prove their worth. Aiswarya Mohan, Hari Adarsh, S.M. Soundarya and S. Charumathy presented vocal music. Sriranjani Ramkumar accompanied them on the violin on all days and Vadasithur Ramachandran and Radhakrishnan took turns to accompany them on the mridangam.
