Dance Recital

Sree Veena Mani, a Kuchipudi dancer and an alumnus of the Bhavan’s Delhi Kendra presented a solo Kuchipudi recital on July 9, 2022, at the Bhavan’s Bengaluru Kendra under its outreach programme supported by the Infosys Foundation. Her dance recital was dedicated to Sri Goddess Lakshmi in her different forms and her consort Hari, also in his Purnavataram, Krishna. The recital also had a contemporary element with the mix of jazz and Western classical piano in a piece that is an ode to Bhudevi or Goddess Earth who is also a form of Sri. This piece was conceived by Veena and her uncle, Swami Iyer, who is also an alumnus of Bhavan’s Delhi Kendra.
“When I was discussing how to shape the programme with the team at Bhavans, the director suggested I should do something on Devi. I wanted my programme to have a chain of thoughts, not just put a few songs together and finish it,” Veena said.
The programme had all elements of Kuchipudi — like Natya or drama, Nritta or foot work especially in the Tarangam and the Pravesa Daruvu to introduce various characters, and how the Jeevatma and Paramatma came together.
Veena has previously presented a Kuchipudi workshop at the Delhi Kendra to students under the SOS programme.
