Celebration of 85th Foundation Day of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and Lecture on 'Place of Vedanta Philosophy in Human Life'

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's 85th Foundation Day was celebrated on Monday, 7-11-2022. On this occasion, the recitation of Lalita-sahasranama-stotra and other hymns was performed by Dr. Girish B. Jani, Director, Sanskrit Studies & Research, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and Shri Krishna Kumar Jha, Asst. Exam. Officer, Bhavan's Sanskrit Exams. Dept. A lecture on 'Place of Vedanta Philosophy in Human Life' was delivered online by Ms. Sangeeta Rau, Sanskrit scholar, and former Faculty-member, Ananthacharya Indological Research Institute, Mumbai.
Dr. Shivgopal Mishra, Asst. Examination Secretary, Bhavan's Sanskrit Exams. Dept., rendered the Vedic prayer and delivered the welcome address. Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, Asst. Director, Bhavan's P.G. & Research Dept., introduced the speaker and compered the programme of the function.
In her interesting lecture, Ms. Rau briefly introduced the basic elements of Vedanta philosophy and elucidated its various facets related with day-to-day life of common man. Quoting profusely from the Vedas, Upanishads, epics and devotional hymns, she discussed the topics like role of noble virtues, causes of sorrow, means for understanding the real nature of worldly objects, and soul, importance of Sadhana (spiritual pursuit), art of meaningful living, characteristics of supreme reality--Brahman and path of self-realization.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Ganapati V. Hegde, In-Charge Principal, Bhavan's Mumbadevi Adarsh Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya.

Happy Classroom Training

Bhavan’s V. M. Public School, Vadodara was the venue for the one-day capacity building programme on Happy Classroom organised by CBSE, Centre of Excellence, Ajmer on September 24, 2022. The training session was attended by 75 participants which included Principals, Vice Principals, Coordinators, HODs and teachers from 49 CBSE schools in Gujarat. The two resource persons Shri Rajeev Kumar Garg, Principal, Datta Meghe World Academy, Navi Mumbai and Dr Rashmirekha Saha, Principal, Jaipuria School, Vadodara conducted the training session covering various sub-topics like happiness index, difference between pleasure, well-being and happiness and how teachers can enhance their emotional skills to empower students in their classroom.

Homage to Acharya Pt. Bhaishankar B. Purohit, and Lecture on ‘Vishaya-vakyas of Brahma-sutra and Advaita-vedanta’ by Prof. Dr. Vijay Pandya

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan paid homage to Acharya Pt. Bhaishankar B. Purohit (26-10-1922--14-7-1998), the veteran Sanskrit scholar, and former Principal of its Mumbadevi Adarsh Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, on his 100th birth anniversary on Wednesday, 26-10-2022. On this occasion, Puja and Rudri-path were performed at Chandramaulishvara temple, Bhavan’s Campus, Andheri (W), Mumbai. On Friday, 28-10-2022, the Parayana of Rudradhyaya and other sacred hymns was performed at the Central Bhavan, by Bhavan’s staff-members including Dr. Girish B. Jani, Director, Sanskrit Studies and Research, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan; Dr. Shivgopal Mishra, Asst. Examination Secretary, Bhavan’s Sanskrit Examination Dept., and Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, Asst. Director, Bhavan’s P. G. and Research Dept. Prof. Dr. Vijay Pandya, the eminent Sanskrit scholar (from Ahmedabad), delivered online a lecture (in Hindi) on ‘Vishaya-vakyas of Brahma-sutra and Advaita-vedanta’. Dr. Ganapati V. Hegde, Principal I/C, Bhavan’s Mumbadevi Adarsh Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, rendered the Vedic prayer and delivered the welcome address. Dr. G. B. Jani, paid homage to his Guru Acharya Pt. Purohitji, who devotedly served at the Bhavan’s various Sanskrit Depts., for more than five decades (1948-1998), in different capacities, and briefly spoke on his life and works. He also introduced the speaker Prof. Dr. Vijay Pandya, Retd. Professor, Dept. of Sanskrit, University of Gujarat, Ahmedabad.
In his inspiring and lucid lecture, Prof. Dr. Vijay Pandya paid tributes to Pt. Purohitji and appreciated his contribution to the Vedantic studies. He discussed at length the topics like ascertainment of the Vishaya-vakyas (the authoritative statements from the Upanishads) referred to in the Brahma-sutra, the core subject of the Brahma-sutra and its structure, extent of its source material, and varieties of the Vishaya-vakyas. Quoting profusely from the works of great commentators of the Brahma-sutra including Adi Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya, Bhaskaracharya, Madhvacharya, Baladeva Vidyabhushana, and modern scholars including S. Radhakrishnan, Paul Deussen, E. A. Solomon, B.N.K. Sharma, S. M. Bhatkhande, and others, he emphatically analysed the major role of the Vishaya-vakyas in the systematisation of the Vedantic philosophy as shown in the Brahma-sutra. He briefly highlighted the various facets of the Upanishadic Advaita-vedanta philosophy and its place among the different philosophies of the world.
Pt. Purohitji’s two sons -- Shri Kirit and Shri Satish paid homage to their father, and humbly thanked the Bhavan for organising celebration of the birth centenary of Pt. Purohitji. Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, compered the programme of the function and proposed the vote of thanks. The function was well attended by staff-members and students of the Bhavan, and family-members of Pt. Purohitji.

NEET Topper

Zeel Vyas, student of Bhavan’s V.M. Public School emerged as the state topper securing an All-India Rank of 9 in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) 2022. She scored 710 out of 720 marks and has a percentile score of 99.99.
It was her first attempt and she is testimony to the fact that students can clear NEET whilst preparing for their Class 12 boards at the same time.
Zeel is always exemplarily well-behaved and demonstrates positive values in her actions. She is the recipient of Shri C. Subramaniam Award for Excellence in Character (2017-2018) and Shri Pranlal Devkaran Nanji Award for Excellence in Harmonious Behaviour (2019-20).

Saraswati Puja

The Saraswati Puja was organized at the Bhavan’s Munshi Saraswati Granthagar (Bhavan’s Library), on Monday, 3rd October, 2022. This Puja is organized every year in Sharadiya Navaratri for seeking Goddess Saraswati’s blessings for progress and prosperity of the Bhavan’s mission of the promotion of education.
Shri Jagdish Lakhani, Joint Executive Secretary & Registrar, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, performed the Puja as the host. Shri Hitesh Trivedi, Assistant Director, Bhavan’s P. G & Research Dept., conducted the rituals of the Puja, as the priest. Shri Ramesh Oza, Ms. Niyati Shah, Smt. Anjali Ambekar, Smt. Heena Sarang, Smt. Dhanashree Ghadge, and other staff-members of the Library participated in this Puja.

Independence Day Celebrations

Bhavan’s School Vadodara celebrated the 75th Independence Day on August 15, 2022 with enthusiasm and patriotic fervour. It was a day with a  difference since it was under the broader ambit of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
The cultural programme kept everyone enthralled with the participants’ high spirits and loud cheers and applause. The students presented wonderful speeches, dance drama and energetic dance performances which were dedicated to our armed forces who spend their lives separated from friends and family in the service of our nation.
Students from different classes also participated with enthusiasm in the plantation drive on the school premises. 
The event was turned into a grand success when students witnessed a parade in the school premises performed on synchronised beats by SRPF Unit Lalbaug, Vadodara. Their four platoons with Police officers, Parade Commanders and Platoon Commanders were present on the school campus to mark the glorious celebration.

Lecture (in Gujarati) on 'Contribution of Rishikas (female seers) to the Vedic tradition' by Prof. Dr. Yogini Vyas

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan organized online its annual Smt. Rasikaben Mehta (Mombasa) Memorial Lecture on Friday, on 23-9-2022.
The well-known Sanskrit scholar Prof. Dr. Yogini Vyas, Retd. Head, Dept. of Sanskrit, Uma Arts and Nathiba Commerce Mahila College, Gandhinagar (Gujarat), delivered online this memorial lecture (in Gujarati) on 'Contribution of Rishikas (female seers) to the Vedic tradition'.
Smt. Aprami Mota, Assistant, Bhavan's Saral Sanskrit Exams. Dept., rendered the prayer, and read the text of tribute paid to Late Smt. Rasikaben Mehta, by her daughter-in-law Smt. Renu Bharat Mehta (from London). Dr. Girish B. Jani, Director, Sanskrit Studies & Research, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, delivered the welcome address and introduced the speaker.
In her enlightening lecture, Prof. Dr. Yogini Vyas highlighted the various aspects of the vast Vedic heritage. She discussed the topics like uniqueness of the prayers, human relationship with divinity, mystical experience and God-realization as depicted in the Vedic Mantras revealed to Aditi, Lopamudra, Ghosha, Apala, Yami, Vishvavara, and other Rishikas. She emphatically presented the brief survey of the literary beauty and philosophical richness of the Vedic hymns related with the female seers.
Late Smt. Rasikaben Mehta's son Shri Bharat Mehta (from London), paid homage to her mother. Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, Asst. Director, Bhavan's P.G. & Research Dept., compered the programme and proposed the vote of thanks.

Gurupurnima celebration at Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati

The Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati celebrated online Gurupurnima on 17th July, 2022. The function commenced with the recitation of Vedic prayer.
Prof. Sharad C. Joshi, Vice Principal, Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati, delivered the welcome address. He read the message of Dr. Dinesh K. Daftary, Chairman, Managing Committee of Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati and Trustee of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
The four following students of Jyotirvisharada 3rd year delivered short speeches on different aspects of Astrology. Ms. Preksha Bhatt spoke on Jupiter’s role (teacher’s role) in her life. Ms. Reena Jain discussed twin charts of KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati). Mr. Amit Poddar and Mr. Dushyant Aswal jointly explained the topic of match-making and beyond.
The entire program was well co-ordinated by Ms. Rashmita Waghdhare (ex-student). Shri Rajesh Kacha, faculty –member, gave brief information about the importance of the activities of Alumni group.
Mr. Satish Menon (ex-student) proposed the vote of thanks. The technical support was managed by faculty- members -- Shri Seemant Maharana (IT head), Shri Kunal Vora and Ms. Urmi Pasad.

Lecture (in Sanskrit) on 'Importance of Sanskrit education in religious and cultural activities' by Dr. Gautam Joshi

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan celebrated the Sanskrit Day, on 10-8-2022. On this occasion, Dr. Gautam Joshi, the eminent Sanskrit scholar (from Mumbai) delivered online a lecture (in Sanskrit) on 'Importance of Sanskrit education in religious and cultural activities'.
The function commenced with the Vedic prayer rendered by Shri Krishna Kumar Jha, Asst. Examination officer, Bhavan's Sanskrit Exams. Dept. Dr. Shivgopal Mishra, Asst. Examination Secretary, Bhavan's Sanskrit Exams. Dept., delivered the welcome address. Dr. Girish B. Jani, Director, Sanskrit Studies and Research, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, introduced the speaker.
In his inspiring lecture, Dr. Gautam Joshi discussed the various topics related with the role and importance of Sanskrit education, in various religious, and cultural activities. In his elaboration of the subject, he quoted profusely from various texts of the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, and Dharmashastras, and pointed out how the knowledge of Sanskrit language helps one to understand these subjects better. He discussed at length the prominence and utility of Sanskrit learning in the fields of Dharma, culture and performance of religious ceremonies, rites, sacrifices, holy festivals and vows. He also spoke on the good conduct, noble virtues, and humanitarian values, and their place in individual and social life; as preached in the sacred texts of our heritage.

Yoga for Wellbeing of Humanity

The yoga day was celebrated on June 21, 2022. Dr. Girish. B. Jani, Director Bhavan's P.G. & research Department, graced the occasion by lighting the lamp. This was followed by the invocation prayer by the faculty members. There was a demonstration of Asanas by the Senior Yoga Teacher, under the theme ‘Yoga for Wellbeing of Humanity’. It was followed by the welcome address by Principal, Dr. Pushpa Neelkantan, who highlighted how Yoga has served Humanity, with good health & wellbeing. This was followed by a talk by Dr. Atul Pednekar, on Panchakosha, its relation to health & wellness.
A debate was conducted on the occasion where the teams comprising of Senior Yoga teachers, YCB certified teachers, Post Graduate & Registered Phd. Students, presented rich perspectives and varieties of context of the Patanjali text and its application to real life situations in a brilliant manner. The Panel of Judges shared their expert views at the end of the debate. Dr. Rajendra Sutar, Dean Academics of Sardar Patel Institute of Technology, Andheri Campus, was the Guest of Honour and he gave away the prizes to the winners of the debate.
