Achievements

The students of Bhavan’s A. H. Wadia High School, Andheri (W) actively participated in different sports competitions and displayed remarkable skills and sportsmanship. A few notable sports achievements for the academic year 2023-24 are as follows:
Budding national archer, Miss Sanskriti Vilas Khambadkar, won medals in following events:

  • Gold medal in Field Archery Outdoor National Championship 2023 organised by the Field Archery Association of India.
  • Silver medal in the 4th National Field Archery Online E-Championship 2023 in the Bamboo Wooden Bow style category organised by the Field Archery Association of India.
  • Gold medal in Bamboo Wooden Bow, at the District-Level Indoor Archery Championship organised by the Suburban Mumbai Archery Welfare Association.
  • Bronze medal in 20 metres, 30 metres as well as in the Overall Category of the Inter-School Archery competition conducted by Prabodhan Kridamahotsav 2023.
Master Swarup Sugriv Pandekar won laurels by bagging medals in the following events:
  • Silver medal in National Silambam (Lathi) Championship organised by the All-India Silambam Federation.
  • Gold medal at the state-level Silambam championship in the Kambu Veechu event. His team also won a trophy in the same event.
  • Two gold medals in the Alangara Veechu Velkambu Veecha (Lathi Competition) Mumbai District Championship, organised by the All-Mumbai City Suburban Silambam Association.
  • Gold medal in All-Mumbai Upnagar children, Cadre and Junior District Kickboxing Championship in Musical Form Hand Style Weapon Event.

Dr. Girish B. Jani Felicitated

The celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of the Department of Sanskrit, University of Mumbai, was organised on March 1-2, 2024. On this occasion, a national seminar on ‘Ramayana and Ramayana Traditions’ was organised on March 1, 2024, and a symposium on ‘Sanskrit Studies in Maharashtra: Past, Present and Future’ was organised on March 2, 2024.
Dr. Girish B. Jani, Director, Bhavan’s P. G. and Research Dept., presided over a paper-reading session at the Symposium. In his brief speech, he paid homage to the Late Prof. H. D. Velankar, the former Director of Bhavan’s P. G. and Research Dept., who was invited to act as the first Head of the Department of Sanskrit, which was founded in 1963, at the University of Mumbai. He deeply appreciated the rich contribution of Sanskrit scholars belonging to Maharashtra, working at different places in India and abroad.
Dr. Shrinivasa Varkhedi, Vice Chancellor, Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi, the chief guest of the event, felicitated 24 eminent Sanskrit scholars and alumni of the Department of Sanskrit, by offering each of them a shawl and a plaque.

Sanskrit Literature & Poetics in the Modern Context

The Bhavan paid homage to its Founder-President Kulapati Dr. K. M. Munshi on his 53rd Punyatithi (death anniversary) on February 8, 2024. On this occasion, the Parayana of the 15th Adhyaya (chapter) of the Gita and the Vishnu Sahasranam Stotra was performed by Shri Krishna Kumar Jha, Dr. Shivgopal Mishra and Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, the staff-members of Bhavan’s Sanskrit Depts., and a lecture (in Hindi) on ‘Sanskrit Literature and Poetics in the Modern Context’ was delivered online by Prof. Dr. Amrita Yadav, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Sanskrit, S.N.D.T. Women’s University, Mumbai.
In her interesting lecture, Prof. Dr. Amrita Yadav discussed topics like the etymological explanation of the word ‘Sahitya’, various genres and objectives of literature, the purpose and scope of poetics, and the modern relevance of Sanskrit literature and its aesthetics.

Homage to Prof. V. M. Sompura


Prof. Vasantlal M. Sompura, the eminent Astrologer and former Principal of Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati, passed away on January 10, 2024. He was born on November 12, 1935, in Khambhat. He was a Civil Engineer and served at the State Bank of India. Being a Sompura Brahmin, he was deeply interested in the profession of Vastu Shastra and Temple Architecture. He stood first at the Jyotirvid examination of Bombay Astrological Society (new Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati) in 1974 and was awarded the gold medal at the hands of Mahamahopadhyaya Prof. J. H. Dave, the Hon. Director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and President of Bombay Astrological Society. He taught various subjects of Astrology at Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati for 46 years. His articles on various aspects of Astrology, Vastushastra, Dharma and Sanskriti (culture) were published in Mumbai Samachar and Janmabhoomi (Gujarati newspapers), different magazines like Agamya Vani and yearly almanacs. He also taught basic Astrology to many Jain monks. For his rich contribution to the great heritage of Astrology, he was conferred the title of Jyotisha Padma by the All India Astrologers’ Federation, Ahmedabad.
The Chairman of Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati and Trustee of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Dr. Dinesh K. Daftary, Principal Shri Sharad Joshi, entire staff members and students of Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati paid homage to Late Prof. Shri V. M. Sompura at a condolence meeting organised on January 14, 2024.

Mumbai, was organised during 1-2 March, 2024. On this occasion, a national
seminar on ‘Ramayana and Ramayana Traditions’ was organised on 1-3-2024, and
a symposium on ‘Sanskrit Studies in Maharashtra : Past, Present and Future’ was
organised on 2-3-2024. Dr. Shakuntala Gawde, Head, Dept. of Sanskrit, University
of Mumbai, delivered the welcome address, and presented a brief report about the
various programmes conducted during the Diamond Jubilee Year.
Dr. Girish B. Jani, Director, Bhavan’s P. G. and Research Dept., presided over a
paper-reading session at the Symposium. In his brief speech, he paid homage to
Late Prof. H. D. Velankar, the former Director of Bhavan’s P. G. and Research
Dept., who was invited to act as the first Head of the Department of Sanskrit founded
in 1963, at the University of Mumbai. He deeply appreciated the rich contribution
of Sanskrit scholars belonging to Maharashtra, working at different places of India
and abroad.
Dr. Shrinivasa Varkhedi, Vice Chancellor, Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi,
the chief guest of the event, spoke on the growing scope of Sanskrit studies in all
disciplines of education, and national heritage. He felicitated 24 eminent Sanskrit
scholars and alumnii of the Department of Sanskrit, by offering shawl and plaque
to them. These scholars included Pt. P. M. Bhatkhande, Dr. Kala Acharya, Dr.
Vijay Pandya, Dr. Urmi Shah, Dr. S. Y. Wakankar, Dr. Gauri Mahulikar, Dr. Parineeta
Deshpande, Dr. Manjusha Gokhale, Dr. N. N. Joshi, Dr. Lalita Namjoshi, Dr. Veena
Londhe, Dr. G. B. Jani and others.
Dr. Shakuntala Gawde, Dr. Madhavi Narasalay, Dr. Suchitra Tajane, and other
staff-members of the Dept., aptly compered various programmes of the celebration.
Dr. Prasad Bhide and Ms. Ananya Govitrikar enacted various scences from the
Sanskrit play ‘Pratima-nataka’ of Bhasa and Shri Sriram Iyyer arranged the
Bharatanatyam performance ‘Dance of Ramayana’ presented by the disciples of
Guru Srirama Narayanaswami, at the end of the celebration.

In her interesting lecture, Prof. Dr. Amrita Yadav discussed the topics like
etymological explanation of the word Sahitya, various genres and objectives of literature, purpose and scope of poetics, modern relevance of Sanskrit literarure and its aesthetics.
Quoting profusely from the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata and standard works on Sanskrit poetics like Kavya-prakasha and Sahitya-darpana, she elaborated the importance of human values, wisdom, beauty of narration, art of creative genius, and mass education through literature, as depicted in the vast Sanskrit literary heritage, in modern context.
Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, proposed the vote of thanks and compered the programme.

Karate Tournament

XIX Mumbai Interschool Sports Kudo Tournament was organised by Nippon Budo Sogo International India. The Primary Section students of Bhavan’s A. H. Wadia School secured 14 Gold, 7 Silver and 25 Bronze Medals in kicks and squats categories. In addition, the school also won the Second Best School Trophy.

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan paid homage to its Founder-President Kulapati Dr. K.M. Munshi on his 136th birth anniversary on Saturday, 30-12-2023. On this occasion, the Parayana of Vedic hymns was performed by the staff-members of Bhavan's Sanskrit Depts. and an online lecture (in Hindi) on 'Sanskrit Proverbs and Practical Wisdom' by Smt. Ujjwala Pawar, Vice-President, Sanskrit Bhasha Sanstha, Mumbai; was organized at the Central Bhavan.
Dr. Shivgopal Mishra, Asst. Examination Secretary, Bhavan's Sanskrit Exams. Dept.; rendered the Vedic prayer, and paid homage to Kulapati Dr. Munshi. Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, Asst. Director, Bhavan's P.G. & Research Dept.; delivered the welcome address, introduced the speaker, and compered the programme.
In her interesting lecture, Smt. Ujjwala Pawar discussed the topics like etymological explanation of the word Lokokti (Proverb), its characteristics and various types, varied subjects of proverbs and wise sayings, and their importance in day-to-day life. She quoted many Sanskrit proverbs and Subhashitas from the Sanskrit classics, and explained their inner purport and their significance in living life.

Online Lecture (in Hindi) on 'Bhagavad-gita: Art of Living Life' by Prof. Dr. Kalpana Athalye, at the Gita Jayanti Celebration on 22-12-2023

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan celebrated Gita-Jayanti on 22-12-2023. On this occasion, the recitation of Bhagavad-gita was performed by Bhavan's staff-members - Shri Krishnakumar Jha, Dr. Shivgopal Mishra and Shri Ajinkya Sampat, at the Central Bhavan. A lecture (in Hindi) on 'Bhagavad-gita : Art of Living Life' was delivered online by Dr. Kalpana Athalye, Associate Professor and Head, Sanskrit Dept., Gogate Joglekar Collage, Ratnagiri (Maharashtra).
Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, Assistant Director, Bhavan's P.G. & Research Dept., rendered the Vedic prayer, delivered the welcome address, and introduced the speaker Prof. Dr. Kalpana Athalye.
In her lucid lecture, Dr. Kalpana Athalye explained various aspects of the art of living as depicted in the Gita and elaborated various topics like the importance of human life, conflicts in life, one's own duties, selfless actions, social welfare (Loka-sangraha), mental capacities, and omnipresence of God. Quoting profusely from works of Jnaneshwara, Lokamanya Tilak and Vinoba Bhave, she briefly presented the holistic view of the Gita for leading a meaningful life.

Celebration of 86th Foundation Day of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and Online Lecture (in Marathi) on 'प्राचीन भारतीय शोध परम्परा' (Ancient Indian Research Tradition)’ by Prof. Dr. Shakuntala Gawde, held on Tuesday, 7-11-2023

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s 86th Foundation Day was celebrated on Tuesday, 7-11-2023. On this occasion, the Parayana of Rudradhyaya and other hymns was performed by Shri Krishna Kumar Jha, Asst. Exam. Officer, Bhavan’s Sanskrit Exams. Dept., and other staff members of Bhavan’s Sanskrit Depts. A lecture (in Marathi) on ‘Ancient Indian Research Tradition’ was delivered online by Prof. Dr. Shakuntala Gawde, Head and Assistant Professor, Dept. of Sanskrit, University of Mumbai, Mumbai.
Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, Asst. Director, Bhavan’s P. G. and Research Dept., rendered the Vedic prayer, delivered the welcome address and compered the programme. Dr. Girish B. Jani, Director, Sanskrit Studies and Research, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, introduced the speaker.
In her enchanting lecture, Prof. Dr. Shakuntala Gawde discussed, at length, the basic research norms including observation, curiosity, research problem, evaluation of hypothesis, design of research, data collection and process, acceptance or abondonment of hypothesis, eduction and application of researched facts. Quoting profusely from the standard texts like Kautilya’s Arthashastra, Yaska’s Nirukta, Charaka-samhita and Shushruta-samhita, she elaborated the prominent Tantra-yuktis (research devices) applied therein for arriving at the correct purport of the core subject of these scriptures. She also analysed the select norms of Indian research methodology as presented in the texts of the Nyaya and Mimamsa schools of Indian philosophy, and commenterial works of Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya and Sayanacharya.

Saraswati Puja

The Saraswati Puja was organised at the Bhavan’s Munshi Saraswati Granthagar (Bhavan’s Library), on October 21, 2023. This puja is organised every year in Sharadiya Navaratri for seeking Goddess Saraswati’s blessings for Bhavan’s mission of the promotion of Indian culture and education.
Prof. Dr. Urmi Desai (renowned Gujarati writer and linguist from Mumbai), the senior member of Bhavan’s Library, performed the Puja as the host. Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, Assistant Director, Bhavan’s P.G. & Research Dept., conducted the rituals of the Puja, as the priest. All officials of Bhavan and staff-members of Bhavan’s various institutes and departments attended the function and offered floral tributes to Goddess Saraswati.
