The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan organized online its annual Smt. Rasikaben Mehta (Mombasa) Memorial Lecture on Monday, 23-9-2024.
Dr. Mrs. Mrunal Bhatt, Head, Dept. of Sanskrit, K. J. Somaiya College of Arts and Commerce, Vidya Vihar, Mumbai; delivered online this memorial lecture (in Gujarati) on 'Contribution of women to Indian culture'.
Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, Asst. Director, Bhavan's P.G. & Research Dept., rendered the Vedic prayer, and delivered the welcome address. Dr. Girish B. Jani, Director, Sanskrit Studies & Research, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, paid homage to Late Smt. Rasikaben Mehta, and introduced the speaker.
In her interesting lecture, Dr. Mrunal Bhatt discussed the etymology of various Sanskrit terms used for woman such as Stri, Nari, etc. for explaining the different roles played by women in familial and social perspectives. She discussed the noteworthy contribution of some leading Rishikas (female seers) of the Vedic age and philosophers of the Upanishadic period. Quoting profusely from ancient texts, she elaborated the rich multi-dimensional contribution of Gargi, Maitreyi and other women made to different fields of Indian cultural heritage.
Shri Bharat Mehta and Shri Ketan Mehta, sons of Late Smt. Rasikaben H. Mehta, paid homage to their mother, and thanked Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for organizing this memorial lecture. Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, compered the programme and proposed the vote of thanks.

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan celebrated the Sanskrit Day on Thursday, 29-8-2024. On this occasion, the Sanskrit scholar Dr. Sriram Iyer, Visiting Faculty, Department of Sanskrit, University of Mumbai, delivered an online lecture (in Sanskrit) on Importance of Sanskrit Education in the fields of learning other than creative writing’.
Shri Krishna Kumar Jha, Additional Examination Secretary, Bhavan’s Saral Sanskrit and Gita Exams. Dept., rendered the Vedic prayer. Dr. S. G. Mishra, Additional Examination Secretary, Bhavan’s Higher Sanskrit Exams. Dept., delivered the welcome address. Dr. Girish B. In his interesting lecture, Dr. Shriram Iyer explained the word Shastra (scripture) and discussed the inevitability of learning Sanskrit for better understanding the inter-disciplinary system of grammar, lingusitics, creative literature, prosody, poetics, dramaturgy, music, dance, acting and other fine arts, polity, Mantrashastra, astrology, astronomy, lexicography, history, epigraphy, numismatics, sculpture, architecture, Ayurveda and other subjects. Quoting profusely from various scriptures, he elaborated the importance of Sanskrit education for preservation and promotion of cultural heritage of India.

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan celebrated the Guru-purnima on Sunday, 21-7-2024. Dr. G. B. Jani, Director, Sanskrit Studies and Research, Bharatiya VidyaBhavan, performed the recitation of the Guru-gita (from Skanda-purana), at Central Bhavan.
On this occasion, the well-known Sanskrit scholar Dr. Vipin Kumar, Lecturer, Dept. of Education, Bihar State Government, Patna (Bihar); delivered an online lecture (in Hindi) on ‘The essence of Guru and Indian Educational Tradition’.
In his inreresting lecture, Dr. Vipin Kumar presented the etymological explanation of the words Gura and Acharya, types and role of teachers and their teaching skills, different objectives of learning, diverse systems of imparting education and the goals of Indian Educational tradition. He also discussed various traditional teaching methods involving questions-answers, examples, stories, symbols, inference, comparison, analysis etc. He appreciated the huge contribution of noble teachers who preserved and nourished the rich tradition of various subjects in India.

The celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of the Department of Sanskrit, University of Mumbai, was organised on March 1-2, 2024. On this occasion, a national seminar on ‘Ramayana and Ramayana Traditions’ was organised on March 1, 2024, and a symposium on ‘Sanskrit Studies in Maharashtra: Past, Present and Future’ was organised on March 2, 2024.
Dr. Girish B. Jani, Director, Bhavan’s P. G. and Research Dept., presided over a paper-reading session at the Symposium. In his brief speech, he paid homage to the Late Prof. H. D. Velankar, the former Director of Bhavan’s P. G. and Research Dept., who was invited to act as the first Head of the Department of Sanskrit, which was founded in 1963, at the University of Mumbai. He deeply appreciated the rich contribution of Sanskrit scholars belonging to Maharashtra, working at different places in India and abroad.
Dr. Shrinivasa Varkhedi, Vice Chancellor, Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi, the chief guest of the event, felicitated 24 eminent Sanskrit scholars and alumni of the Department of Sanskrit, by offering each of them a shawl and a plaque.

The Bhavan paid homage to its Founder-President Kulapati Dr. K. M. Munshi on his 53rd Punyatithi (death anniversary) on February 8, 2024. On this occasion, the Parayana of the 15th Adhyaya (chapter) of the Gita and the Vishnu Sahasranam Stotra was performed by Shri Krishna Kumar Jha, Dr. Shivgopal Mishra and Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, the staff-members of Bhavan’s Sanskrit Depts., and a lecture (in Hindi) on ‘Sanskrit Literature and Poetics in the Modern Context’ was delivered online by Prof. Dr. Amrita Yadav, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Sanskrit, S.N.D.T. Women’s University, Mumbai.
In her interesting lecture, Prof. Dr. Amrita Yadav discussed topics like the etymological explanation of the word ‘Sahitya’, various genres and objectives of literature, the purpose and scope of poetics, and the modern relevance of Sanskrit literature and its aesthetics.
Homage to Prof. V. M. Sompura
Prof. Vasantlal M. Sompura, the eminent Astrologer and former Principal of Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati, passed away on January 10, 2024. He was born on November 12, 1935, in Khambhat. He was a Civil Engineer and served at the State Bank of India. Being a Sompura Brahmin, he was deeply interested in the profession of Vastu Shastra and Temple Architecture. He stood first at the Jyotirvid examination of Bombay Astrological Society (new Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati) in 1974 and was awarded the gold medal at the hands of Mahamahopadhyaya Prof. J. H. Dave, the Hon. Director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and President of Bombay Astrological Society. He taught various subjects of Astrology at Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati for 46 years. His articles on various aspects of Astrology, Vastushastra, Dharma and Sanskriti (culture) were published in Mumbai Samachar and Janmabhoomi (Gujarati newspapers), different magazines like Agamya Vani and yearly almanacs. He also taught basic Astrology to many Jain monks. For his rich contribution to the great heritage of Astrology, he was conferred the title of Jyotisha Padma by the All India Astrologers’ Federation, Ahmedabad.
The Chairman of Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati and Trustee of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Dr. Dinesh K. Daftary, Principal Shri Sharad Joshi, entire staff members and students of Bhavan’s Jyotisha Bharati paid homage to Late Prof. Shri V. M. Sompura at a condolence meeting organised on January 14, 2024.

The celebration of Diamond Jubilee of Department of Sanskrit, University of
Mumbai, was organised during 1-2 March, 2024. On this occasion, a national
seminar on ‘Ramayana and Ramayana Traditions’ was organised on 1-3-2024, and
a symposium on ‘Sanskrit Studies in Maharashtra : Past, Present and Future’ was
organised on 2-3-2024. Dr. Shakuntala Gawde, Head, Dept. of Sanskrit, University
of Mumbai, delivered the welcome address, and presented a brief report about the
various programmes conducted during the Diamond Jubilee Year.
Dr. Girish B. Jani, Director, Bhavan’s P. G. and Research Dept., presided over a
paper-reading session at the Symposium. In his brief speech, he paid homage to
Late Prof. H. D. Velankar, the former Director of Bhavan’s P. G. and Research
Dept., who was invited to act as the first Head of the Department of Sanskrit founded
in 1963, at the University of Mumbai. He deeply appreciated the rich contribution
of Sanskrit scholars belonging to Maharashtra, working at different places of India

Deshpande, Dr. Manjusha Gokhale, Dr. N. N. Joshi, Dr. Lalita Namjoshi, Dr. Veena
Londhe, Dr. G. B. Jani and others.

staff-members of the Dept., aptly compered various programmes of the celebration.
Dr. Prasad Bhide and Ms. Ananya Govitrikar enacted various scences from the
Sanskrit play ‘Pratima-nataka’ of Bhasa and Shri Sriram Iyyer arranged the
Bharatanatyam performance ‘Dance of Ramayana’ presented by the disciples of
Guru Srirama Narayanaswami, at the end of the celebration.

Quoting profusely from the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata and standard works on Sanskrit poetics like Kavya-prakasha and Sahitya-darpana, she elaborated the importance of human values, wisdom, beauty of narration, art of creative genius, and mass education through literature, as depicted in the vast Sanskrit literary heritage, in modern context.

XIX Mumbai Interschool Sports Kudo Tournament was organised by Nippon Budo Sogo International India. The Primary Section students of Bhavan’s A. H. Wadia School secured 14 Gold, 7 Silver and 25 Bronze Medals in kicks and squats categories. In addition, the school also won the Second Best School Trophy.

On this occasion, the Parayana of Vedic hymns was performed by the staff-members of Bhavan's Sanskrit Depts. and an online lecture (in Hindi) on 'Sanskrit Proverbs and Practical Wisdom' by Smt. Ujjwala Pawar, Vice-President, Sanskrit Bhasha Sanstha, Mumbai; was organized at the Central Bhavan.

In her interesting lecture, Smt. Ujjwala Pawar discussed the topics like etymological explanation of the word Lokokti (Proverb), its characteristics and various types, varied subjects of proverbs and wise sayings, and their importance in day-to-day life. She quoted many Sanskrit proverbs and Subhashitas from the Sanskrit classics, and explained their inner purport and their significance in living life.
