Bhavan's 26th Pongal Music Festival

The Coimbatore Kendra made a grand comeback with its 26th edition of Bhavan's Pongal Music Festival after a forced two-year gap. This year, the festival was held between January 13-17, 2023, and it was dedicated to the memory of the Tamil saint, philosopher and social reformer Vallalar Ramalinga Adigal, as the year 2023 coincides with his 200th jayanthi (birth anniversary).
The Bhavan normally uses the occasion to honour musicians who have dedicated their life to music. On the inaugural day, the title 'Sangeeth Samrat' was conferred on noted musician Shri V. Rajkumar Bharathi in recognition of the service he has rendered to music in various capacities such as singer, composer, music-director and coordinator of dance-dramas.
The 'Kovai Subri Muruga Gana Award' was conferred on Shri N. Vaidyanathan who has made it his life's mission to spread Thiruppugazh songs among the masses and has been instrumental for starting the 'Thiruppugazh Anbargal' movement in the city.
The festival opened with the music choir of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's R.S. Puram School, setting the tone with a soulful and melodious rendition of the compositions of Bharathiar and Vallalar.
This 26th Pongal Music Festival featured a galaxy of eminent and seasoned musicians and also launched several upcoming local musicians.

21st Dance Festival - 2022

The 21st Bhavan's Dance festival that was held for three days from October 14 to 16 2022, gave a much-needed boost to the classical dancers of the city, who could finally perform at a gathering, after a two-year hiatus. 'Sriman Narayana', a deity who is very close to the hearts of millions of Indians was the theme that was chosen for this Dance Festival.
An important feature of the Bhavan's Dance Festival is the conferment of the 'Nritya Ratna' award on an experienced and talented dancer or dance teacher who has contributed richly to the field. This year's recipient of the award was Vidushi Smt. Mrudula Rai, a well-known dancer from this very city of Coimbatore. She is the Founder-Director of Shree Natya Niketan.
A total of six Bharatanatyam dance troupes in the city were invited to perform on the theme, 'Sriman Narayana' and on the opening day, the students of Bhavan's faculty of Fine Arts, led by Guru Smt. Karthyayini Srinath gave a crisp introductory presentation.
The Festival concluded with the recently-conferred Nritya Ratna Awardee, Smt. Mrudula Rai and her Shree Natya Niketan troupe's performance.
The success of the Dance Festival was largely due to the fine interpretation and presentation of the theme by the various dance schools that participated this year.

Swami Paramarthananda Lectures

During the last week of April, Pujyasri Swami Paramarthananda delivered a series of lectures, over seven days, in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore, on the subject of Uddhava Gita. It was actually a continuation of the lecture series begun a few years ago.
Uddhava Gita is the very final teaching of Lord Krishna before He gave up His worldly body and went back to His abode. It is a teaching conveyed to Uddhava, who was a close friend and a strong devotee of Lord Krishna. This Uddhava Gita shows many similarities to Bhagavad Gita which was a teaching from Lord Krishna to his good friend and cousin, Arjuna. Swamiji pointed out these key aspects of Uddhava Gita and then did a recap of the first few chapters of Uddhava Gita (already covered in the previous years before Covid). He then picked up the thread from the fifth chapter. Undoubtedly the attendees felt lifted up to a highly philosophical and serene plane throughout these lectures. Such was the power of the subject and the spiritual radiance of Swamiji.
