Obituary

Smt. Ushakumari K, 54 years, Senior Officer, Accounts & Finance Department, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kochi Kendra passed away on January 25, 2023 following a cardiac arrest.
She joined Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kochi Kendra in 1993 and served the institution for almost 30 years with distinction, dedication, loyalty and commitment. With her passing away, Bhavan’s Kochi Kendra has lost a very active and able person. 
She is survived by her husband, Shri Nandanan Pillai and son, Deepak N N (Alumnus of Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara).
May her noble soul rest in eternal peace.

176th Tyagaraja Aradhana Festival

The Kochi Kendra celebrated the 176th Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival by organising a musical recital of the Pancharatna Krithis in praise of Lord Rama, by the famous Carnatic composer and vocalist Thyagaraja Swamigal in Sardar Patel Sabhagriha, Ernakulam on January 12, 2023.
Around 25 music teachers, staff and percussionists of the seven Bhavan’s schools and students of Kalabharati of the Kendra enthralled the audience for 1 ½ hours with a mesmerising recital.
The musical tribute started with an invocation in Saurashtra Ragam Aadithalam “Sree Ganesha” followed by “Jagadandakaraka” in Ragam Nata Adithalam “Sadhinjene O Manasa” Ragam Aarabhi Aadithalam, “Kanakaruchire” Ragam Varali Aadithalam and culminated with the ever enchanting and inimitable “Endhoru Mahanubhavolu” in Sreeragam Aadithalam.
Former Principal of Swathi Thirunal Sangeetha Academy Thiruvananthapuram Prof. Kumara Kerala Varma who was a special invitee for the evening, congratulated and blessed the musicians for their splendid performance.

All Kerala Inter School Quiz Competition

The 36th Bhavan’s M.K.K Nayar Memorial All-Kerala Inter-School Quiz contest was held at Bhavan’s Sardar Patel Sabha Griha, Ernakulam on January 23, 2023. Twenty-six schools participated in the competition.
The team from Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya, Kakkand, Dan Paul Jacob and Shraavan S emerged the winners of the event and bagged the ever rolling trophy, cash award of Rs. 2500 and certificates. Harith Mohan and Aman B Manoj of Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara secured the second place, cash award of Rs. 2000 and certificates.
The third place was won by Shradha S and Siva Nanda Raj of Bhavan’s Newsprint Vidyalaya, Velloor. They were also awarded a cash prize of Rs. 1500 and certificates.
Shri E. Ramankutty, Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kochi Kendra distributed the certificates, cash prize and trophies to the winners.

Praudyogiki

As part of the year-long Golden Jubilee celebrations of the school, ‘Praudyogiki’, an Interschool Tinkering Fest was held at Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara on January 9, 2023.
The event had three competitions namely ‘Un Dessin Anime’ (animated movie making), ‘Ponte Le Modele’ (build a bridge incorporating technology with recyclable materials) and ‘Choisir Et Concevoir’ (designing a working model). ‘Praudyogiki’ had students from as many as 12 schools in and around Kochi taking part in the competitions. Principal Smt. Mini K delivered the inaugural address and Sri. Binu A, Asst. Professor, Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology offered felicitations.
Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya, Kakkanad emerged the overall winners and Vidyodaya School, Thevakkal were the runners up.
Aimed at showcasing the students’ technical skills, the fest also provided an opportunity for them to demonstrate their innovative ideas and products.

National Kho-Kho Tournament

The students of Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Eroor participated in the CBSE National Kho-Kho competition held at D A V Senior Secondary Public School, Punjab, from December 25–29, 2022. Nearly 20 cluster teams from various schools in India participated in the tournament. The school’s kho kho girls’ team qualified for the quarter-finals.

Munshi Memorial Oration

The birth anniversary of Kulapati Dr K M Munshi was commemorated by the Kochi Kendra with the 4th edition of the Kulapati Dr K M Munshi Memorial Oration. This year’s annual oration by renowned Oncologist & Motivational Speaker Dr V P Gangadharan on ‘Cancer - Myths & Facts’ was held on December 29, 2022 at Sardar Patel Sabha Griha, Kochi . 
In his enlightening speech, Dr. Gangadharan highlighted the many wrong notions widely prevalent in society regarding cancer which leads to needless worry and even hinders good prevention and treatment decisions.
The oration was attended by the large fraternity of members of Kendra Committee and Education & Research wing, heads of all institutions under Kochi Kendra, teachers, staff and other invited guests and well-wishers.

Thullal Thrayam

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in association with Infosys Foundation conducted the 15th Cultural Outreach programme, ‘Thullal Thrayam’ at Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir Elamakkara, Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir Girinagar and at Sardar Patel Sabha Griha, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on December 14, 2022.
Thullal originated in the 18th century as a new kind of stage play by the famous Malayalam poet, Kunchan Nambiar. Thullal has three broad classifications Ottan Thullal, Sheethankan Thullal and Parayan Thullal. Ottan Thullal is a form of thullal with swift body movements. Parayan thullal has the artist wearing a snake-headed crown while covering his body with ashes and red silk. Sheethankan Thullal has the artist donning palm leaves and singing in a mild voice.
Shri Kalamandalam Suresh Kaliyath and party performed the thullal. Kalamandalam Suresh Kaliyath boasts extensive training in the art form of Thullal. Kalamandalam Mohanakrishnan, a versatile performer and teacher of Thullal, is empanelled with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and SPIC MACAY.

Book Release

The Kochi Kendra organised a book release function on December 16, 2022 at Bhavan’s Sardar Patel Sabha Griha. The book is authored by Smt. Saroja Muralikrishnan, an ex-teacher of Bhavan’s schools and currently a Faculty at Bhavan’s Nursery Teachers Training College, Kochi, (BNTTC).
Sri C. A. Venugopal, C. Govind, Chairman Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kochi Kendra released the book titled ‘Animal Hide and Seek’. Adv. Sri M. Anil Kumar, Mayor, Corporation of Kochi received the first copy of the book and Sri E. Ramankutty, Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kochi Kendra received the second copy.
In the Presidential address, Chairman Sri C. A. Venugopal and C. Govind linked the contents of the book to stories of Panchatantra and described the impact it would have on children’s minds.

38th Inter-School Athletic Meet – 2022

The 38th Dr. K. M. Munshi Memorial Inter-School Athletic Meet under the aegis of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kochi Kendra, was held on December 9 and 10 at Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Eroor.
The two-day meet was inaugurated on December 9 by Sri Tinu Yohannan, Indian cricketer and the first Kerala player to play Test and one-day cricket matches for India. A dynamic aerobics display by the students of Bhavan’s Varuna Vidyalaya, Thrikkakara, was the cynosure of all spectators. Band display by the students of Bhavan’s Munshi Vidyashram, Thiruvankulam, and Bhavan’s Varuna Vidyalaya, Thrikkakara, added grace and colour to the meet.
Kochi Kendra Chairman C A Venugopal C Govind lit the torch and handed it over to the torchbearers who won the first place in various sports competitions of all the seven schools under Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kochi Kendra.
Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Poochatty, emerged as winners of the 38th Dr K M Munshi Memorial Athletic Meet Ever Rolling Trophy. The first runner-up position was bagged by Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya, Kakkanad, and the second runner-up was Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Eroor.
Records set at the Meet
1. Devak Bhusan of BVB School, Chevayur, set a new record in high jump with a height of 1.9 metres in Senior Boys category.
2. Hrithika Ashok Menon of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vaduthala, set two records in the 100 m and 200 m races with a timing of 12.6 seconds and 27.2 seconds respectively in the Senior Girls category.
3. Aagney Sonith Manakkat of Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Eroor, set the record in the 200 m race in Junior Boys category with a timing of 25.2 seconds.
4. In the 4x100 m relay race, in the Senior Boys category, Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Eroor, set the record at 53 seconds.

Sports Day

The Annual Sports Athletic meet of Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Eroor, was held on November 4 and 5, 2022, for primary and secondary-senior secondary classes respectively.
The chief guest, Ms. Leelamma Santhosh, former basketball captain and selection committee member of the Indian basketball team, hoisted the school flag and declared the athletic meet open. Over 200 students participated in various programmes like aerobics, hula hoop, karate and yoga display.
