The Bhavan’s Mungalal Goenka Samshodhan Mandir (Mungalal Goenka Research Institute) was established in 1939, for promoting higher studies and research in Indology. Later on, it got recognised by University of Mumbai for post-graduate studies and research in Sanskrit and Indian culture, and was named as Mungalal Goenka Institute of Post-Graduate Studies and Research (also known as Bhavan’s P. G. & Research Dept.).

The staff-members of the Institute had carried out major responsibilities in editing and publication of Bhavan’s (1) History and Culture of the Indian People (Vols. I-XI), (2) Upanishadic Project (Five Upanishads), (3) Manusmriti with seven Sanskrit commentaries (Volumes I-VI), and (4) Singhi Jain Series (66 volumes). The Institute also carries out the publication of Bhavan’s Research Journal ‘Bharatiya Vidya’ (in English) since 1939, and Sanskrit Journal ‘Samvid’ (since 1964). So far, 66 volumes of ‘Bharatiya Vidya’, and 39 volumes of ‘Samvid’ have been published, and work of publication of backlog issues of both the journals is under process. 47 Indological works have been published under Bharatiya Vidya Series, and 14 Sanskrit works have been published in Samvid Sanskrit Series. The Institute was intensively involved in the editorial work of the following books published by the Bhavan:-

• 1) Shri-radha-sudha-nidhi-stotra of Mahaprabhu Hita Harivamsha
• 2) Shri-jagadguru-chandrashekharendra-sarasvati-vijaya-kavyam (Sanskrit Mahakavya in 12 Cantos) by Dr. S. Srinivasa Sarma
• 3) Shrimad-buddha-bhagavatam (Sanskrit Mahakavya on the life and work of Gautam Buddha) by Hosakere Nagappa Sastri
• 4) Gita-pravachanani (Acharya Vinoba Bhave’s Marathi work ‘Gita Pravachana’ translated into Sanskrit by his brother Shri Shivaji Bhave)
• 5) Shrutyartha-muktavali (Sanskrit translation of the Malayalam work on the Vedas and Indian culture authored by V. K. Narayana Bhattatiri)
• 6) Saundarya-lahari of Adi Shankaracharya, with ‘Chandrika’ Sanskrit commentary by Pt. Suna Bhatt (Edited by Dr. G. B. Jani)
• 7) Gita: The Song Extraordinary by Dr. Damodar Thakur
• 8) The Saga of the Shahanshas [English adaptation (in prose) of Firdausi’s Shahnamah -- by Adi F. Merhcant]
• 9) Chaplin, Gandhi and Me2 (English translation of Gujarati work by Dr. Jayanti Patel)

The staff-members of the Institute are also associated, in different capacities, with Bhavan’s Mumbadevi Adarsh Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, Sanskrit Examinations Department, Jyotisha Bharati, Bhavan’s Library and other depts/institutes of the Bhavan. They also regularly participate in the seminars/conferences organised in Mumbai, and other cities.
