The Guru-purnima was celebrated on 29-07-2026 at the Central Bhavan, Mumbai.
Dr. Hitesh Trivedi, Asst. Director, Bhavan's & P.G. Dept. and Dr. S.G. Mishra, Examination Secretary, Bhavan’s Higher Sanskrit Dept., recited Guru-stotra. On this occasion, a lecture (in Hindi) on ‘The Contemporary Relevance of the Ramayana’ was delivered online by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Prof. Dr. Niranjan Patel, Vice Chancellor, Sardar Patel University, Anand, Gujarat. Shri Krishna Kumar Jha, Addl. Examination Secretary, Bhavan’s Saral Sanskrit and Gita Examinations Dept., rendered the Vedic prayer. Dr. Girish B. Jani, Director, Bhavan’s P. G. & Research Dept., welcomed the speaker. Dr. Hitesh Trivedi introduced the speaker and compered the programme of the function.
In his interesting and profound lecture, Prof. Patel highlighted the enduring significance of India's epics in shaping ethical, social, and national life. He explained that the Ramayana and Mahabharata are not merely ancient narrative but timeless guides for re-evaluating tradition in the context of modern challenges. The lecture emphasized the ideals of Lord Rama, the principles of Lokadharma, Rajadharma, and Rashtradharma, and the importance of value-based living, and selfless service, vital role of Guru in nurturing wisdom, values, and righteous conduct. It also explored profound philosophical concepts such as Atma, Brahman, Maya, and Svadharma, illustrating how they contribute to inner purification and self-realization. He discussed the integration of the Purushartha chatushtaya -- Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha - as the foundation of a balanced life. He quoted the etymology of Dharma presented in Vaisheshika Philosophy. Drawing upon Indian knowledge traditions, the lecture connected these ideals with contemporary issues such as family values, ethical leadership, social harmony, and nation-building.
The programme concluded by reaffirming that the Ramayana continues to inspire individuals towards righteous conduct, responsible citizenship, and holistic personal and societal development.
Dr. Shivgopal Mishra proposed the vote of thanks.

Bhavan’s Munshi Saraswati Mandir Granthagar has initiated a series of programmes called ‘Pages & Perspectives – a Readers’ Retreat’. Under this series, programmes like book talks, discussions, contests, and other similar activities are being held to interest and engage readers.
The second event of the Series was a talk by Dr. Urmi Ghanshyam Desai, a renowned Gujarati linguist and author of several books, on May 30, 2026, at the Gita Mandir Auditorium.
Dr. Urmi Ghanshyam Desai touched upon many interesting and lesser-known aspects of languages in general and the Gujarati language in particular. The audience asked interesting questions and raised concerns over the declining use and interest in learning our own language among the younger generation.
Dr. Desai emphasised the importance of being connected to one’s roots and being mindful of correct written and spoken usage of the language.

Manas Vaishali Makarand Shinde secured the First Position with a Distinction in the 'Sanskrit-Kovid' examination, conducted under the Saral Sanskrit Examinations by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai on 21, 22 February 2026. At just 10 years of age, Manas has achieved this unprecedented success through his sheer hard work and dedication. He has passed all five levels of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Saral-Sanskrit examinations with Distinction. With this achievement, Manas has become the youngest student to attain the title of 'Sanskrit Kovid' with the first rank.
Annual Day
The 79th Annual programme of the Sangeet and Nartan Shikshapeeth was celebrated on May 2, 2026 by the students and staff of the department.
The Annual Day included a presentation of the students of Smt. Manasi Deshpandeji who presented a beautifully choreographed item accompanied on tabla by Shri Chandrashekhar Gandhi, Shri Pushkraj Bhagwat on vocals, Shri Pranay Lad on Harmonium and Smt. Manasi Deshpande for Padhant.

We regret to inform you that our colleague, Shri Nikhil S. Sant, passed away on May 17, 2026 after a brief illness. He was 44 years old and had been sincerely serving Bhavan for almost 20 years.
He is survived by his mother, Madhuri and wife Swapnali. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Central Bhavan bid a heartfelt farewell to Smt. Jayalakshmi Iyer, Head of Central Bhavan’s Provident Fund Department who retired on March 31, 2026 after offering 45 years of dedicated service to the institution.
Smt. Jayalakshmi joined Bhavan as a young girl in June 1980 in the post of Asst. Accountant. A sincere and hardworking person, she was retained in service even after she retired in September, 2020.
We extend our warmest wishes to Smt. Jayalakshmi for a long, healthy and joyful retired life.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, a Mind and Body Wellness Workshop for women was held at Gita Mandir Hall on March 7, 2026. The session focused on promoting holistic well-being and encouraging women to nurture both mental and physical health.

Munshi Saraswati Mandir Granthagar, the Bhavan’s Library organised its second Library Members’ Meet on February 7, 2026. The theme of the Meet this year was ‘Your Library, Your Space’, signifying the role of the library as a place for members to not only read and study but also a space to connect with like-minded readers, and share thoughts, expertise, and talents.
The theme received a very enthusiastic response from the members, and there were a variety of performances from the young readers of the Children’s Library to very senior members of the library. There were poetry recitations, songs, dance, an instrumental piece, and stories in Sanskrit, too. A few library members shared their experiences of reading and using Bhavan’s Library, too. The library team presented a small skit narrating the history and roots of the library and its present activities.
The event was attended by more than 70 members, some along with their families and friends.

At Central Bhavan, Republic Day was celebrated on January 26, 2026. Shri S. G. Aney, Senior Advocate, Bombay High Court hoisted the flag in presence of Shri Jagdish Lakhani, Executive Secretary & Director General, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai and other staff members.
Book Festival
Foyer (SFC Building) from January 27-29, 2026 showcased a diverse collection of books, journals and magazines on a variety of subjects such as literature, education, culture, history, science and current topics.
Bhavan’s Journal Book Festival, a three-day academic festival was organised by the Publication Division of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in association with Bhavan’s College, Andheri (West). The festival held at the Palanji Sadan.

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan paid homage to its Founder-President Kulapati Dr. K.M. Munshi on his 138th birth anniversary on December 30, 2025. On this occasion, the Parayana of Vedic hymns and Vishnusahasranama was performed by the staff members of Bhavan’s P.G. & Research Dept. and Sanskrit Exam. Dept. It was followed by an online lecture (in English) on ‘New Vistas in the Research in Vyakaranashastra’ delivered by Prof. Malhar Kulkarni, Professor, Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Bombay.
In his insightful lecture, the speaker emphasised that research in Vyakarana-Shastra is a two-way process, where traditional grammatical knowledge and modern technology enrich each other, leading to the continued development of Sanskrit grammatical studies through new ideas, methods, and terminologies.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan celebrated Gita Jayanti on December 1, 2025. On this occasion, Bhagavad Gita verses were recited by Bhavan’s staff-members of various Sanskrit Departments, at the Central Bhavan. A lecture (in English) on ‘Relevance of Karma, Bhakti and Jnanamarga for an Integrated Personality’ was delivered online by Dr. Kala Acharya, Prof. Emeritus, K.J. Somaiya Institute of Dharma Studies, Mumbai.
In her enlightening lecture, Dr. Kala Acharya explored the unique idea of harnessing the triune paths enjoined in the Gita for an integrated personality.
Felicitation of Jagadguru Sri Sankaracharya of Kanchi
Guruvandana Samaroha was organised on November 29, 2025 at Sri Shanmukhananda Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Auditorium, Sion, Mumbai, wherein hosts of cultural, educational and socio-religious institutions based in and around Mumbai felicitated HH Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswati Swamigal, the 70th Jagadguru Sankaracharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Pitham on his visit to Mumbai after more than two decades. Over sixty institutions participated in the grand event.
In his Anugraha-bhashanam, HH Swamiji spoke about the egalitarian and altruistic ideals of the Vedas and the need to re-create a society based on the Vedic ethos. Referring to the ties of the Kanchi Mutt with the city of Mumbai, Swamiji also mentioned the names of Kulapati Munshiji, the founder of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Sri Ramakrishnanji, its former executive secretary as devotees of the mutt, who, along with many others had kept the contact between the Kanchipuram and Mumbai intact.
Dr. Sriram Narainswamy Iyer, Dy. Director, Sanskrit Studies and Research, represented the Bhavan at the event. He along with his wife Smt. Shilpa Iyer, honoured the Jagadguru in the customary manner.
